I am Julia Higginbottom a crofter, community specialist, artist and radical. I have been known as @gabysslave across many social media sites for nearly 20 years. I first took the moniker on my second attempt to understand Twitter at the beginning of 2008, which was 10 years after signing up to Hotmail, just as I had my daughter Gaby in 1998. The moniker was coined from this hotmail in a 'fit of pique' naming of myself as Gaby's Slave on my email! I am an early adopter on technosocial platforms and have been fascinated by them, the learning and community I have found in different ways on them. On the 20th of January 2025, I left twitter, facebook, instagram and whatsapp with a strongly worded, unequivocal statement sent to some of the thousands of friends and family that I could reach. It was quite painful and I am sure I will grive some of those I have lost on the way. I am sure to leave a few other sites as I calculate how to be a good ally to those most disadvantaged.
